I uninstalled a few tweaks (also, installed a few more, but I doubt that's relevant.) So my working hypothesis is one of the tweaks I removed, had been doing automated Google queries exclusively over cell network. This traffic may have been sent by malicious software, a browser plug-in, or a script that sends automated requests.
